Big Green Egg Refresh

After 10 years of service our trusty Big Green Egg was in dire need of a refresh and renewal.  The wheeled stand needed deep cleaning and repainting.  The flue topper needed to be cleaned or replaces as did the folding shelves.  Finally the inside needed to be cleaned out and the gasket needed to be replaced.  I had put this off for several months because I had a hard time finding a list of the bolts and screws needed as several looked like they may be too far gone to be reused.  Eventually I found hardware packs from Appliance Factory parts  (BGE113702, BGE003256, BGE003201) for the stand, folding shelves, and bands.  These should work for the Large BGE.  I also decided to upgrade the grill grate and flue and made new wooden handles and slats for the shelves.

Tips and tricks:

  1. If you cook pizza’s or something hot as the last cook prior to cleaning it will help make things easier.

  2. I used a big plastic store box and dawn dish soap to wash all the parts once disassembled.

  3. Be sure to clean the edges of the top and bottom well prior to placing the new gaskets.  I used simple green.

  4. I kept all the old hardware separated by its main component.

  5. Use high temp paint.

  6. When reassembling the BGE in the stand place the bottom unit in first then the lower band should be loosely tightened.  Lower the top into the top band and align it with the ash door.  Finally tighten the band to securely hold everything in place.
